Homeschooling has grown significantly since Covid, as many parents reassessed their children’s educational needs and the flexibility of learning at home. While it may not be the right path for everyone, Dr. Rodger Dean Duncan interviewed a mother who shared how her children are not only thriving academically but also gaining confidence, independence, and a love for learning. Her homeschool journey highlights both the challenges and rewards of the experience, offering valuable insights for parents who may be weighing this option.

Leading at Home: A Mastering Homeschool Framework
for Purposeful Family Leadership
By Dr. Rodger Dean Duncan
Education is evolving, and homeschooling has entered the mainstream. In the U.S. alone, nearly four million children are educated at home, and families worldwide are embracing it as a meaningful way to shape learning, family life, and long-term growth.
Rachel Sanford, a mother of four and MBA graduate, has turned her personal homeschooling experience into a structured approach she calls Mastering Homeschool. Her program isn’t about selling curriculum or promoting a particular philosophy. Instead, it’s a practical framework designed to help parents lead their homeschool with purpose, clarity, and confidence.
“Parents homeschool for different reasons,” Sanford explains. “Some are running from something—unsafe environments, outside pressures, or school cultures that don’t align with their values. Others are running toward something richer—deeper family connections, flexibility, meaningful learning experiences, and the chance to tailor education to their child’s strengths.” For her family, it was the latter, and the rewards are long-lasting.
At the heart of her approach is strategic scaffolding—a way of organizing learning and family life so decisions flow intentionally rather than reactively. Academics matter, but they are only one part of a child’s growth. Relationships, emotional well-being, problem-solving, social skills, and character development are equally important.
Sanford’s framework is built on four pillars:
Envision. Define purpose and clarify what values, outcomes, and family culture you want to cultivate.
Design. Shape routines, resources, and daily rhythms to bring that vision to life.
Plan. Map a sustainable path for the school year that balances learning and life.
Prepare. Equip both environment and family for the journey ahead.
Each pillar reflects principles Sanford learned in business school and leadership experience—clarity of vision, intentional planning, and systems that are efficient and adaptable. Applied at home, these ideas help parents guide their homeschool proactively, taking responsibility while leading children with purpose.
The framework is flexible and works for any family—dual-income households, single parents, or families with a stay-at-home caregiver. “Every child and every family is unique,” Sanford says. “The framework is simple in principle but transformative in practice.”
One common mistake new homeschoolers make is starting with the curriculum. “When curriculum drives the day, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture,” Sanford adds. Parents should begin with vision, learning styles, and family values, and then choose resources that align with those priorities.
Homeschooling, when approached intentionally, is about more than completing lessons. It’s about raising children who become capable, confident, and creative adults, while also strengthening family bonds and instilling resilience, curiosity, and purpose. Families who follow a framework like Mastering Homeschool find smoother days, fewer crises, and a stronger sense of direction.
Sanford sees a common thread in the families she serves: they are values-driven, solution-oriented, long-term focused, and willing to take responsibility for their children’s growth. They understand that leadership starts at home.
When parents lead with clarity, vision, and intention, homeschooling becomes a powerful way to develop not just knowledge, but character, problem-solving skills, and lifelong confidence. With the right framework, families can create a home where children thrive academically, socially, and personally—while parents embrace their role as thoughtful, purposeful leaders shaping learning and family life.
