God has endowed you with the potential for greatness — so why forfeit that opportunity? The truth is, some people don’t set out to make life harder for themselves, but their choices don’t always work in their favor. In fact, some people do things that literally undermine their success. Next time you’re tempted to compromise your principles or take the easy route, remember: You’re better than that — so prove it. The path you choose today will shape the person you become tomorrow. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”
Falling short of our goals happens despite our best efforts. But compromising your integrity, lowering your standards, or settling for mediocrity is a conscious choice…and one you may deeply regret. Recognizing this distinction is key to being your better self.
Choices Have Consequences
Here are 11 ways people consciously undermine themselves:
Fail to give your best. Do you strive for excellence, or just do enough to scrape by?
Avoid accountability. Do you take full responsibility for your actions, or shift the blame?
Fail to invest in yourself. Do you encourage yourself to grow every day, or wait for others to spoon-feed you?
Refuse to accept feedback. Do you build walls around yourself, or eagerly invite feedback?
Expect rewards without effort or sacrifice. Do you work hard, or expect others to shoulder the burden?
Act impulsively and irrationally. Do you think rationally, or react emotionally?
Lower your standards and stoop to another’s level. Do you listen to your conscience, or let others drag you down?
Ignore the power of self-discipline. Do you steer your own course, or go with the flow?
Ignore basic manners and decency. If someone else acted like you, would you respect them?
Refuse to respect others. Do you treat people with dignity and respect, or like dirt?
Settle for mediocrity. Do you have high expectations for yourself and others, or set the bar so low that people can trip over it?
Stop Selling Yourself Short
If you’re like most people, you have hopes and dreams. Bringing them to life doesn’t happen by chance — you must create the conditions for success. It means setting high expectations, pouring yourself into your work, and making the sacrifices required to turn vision into reality. It calls for clear priorities, wise use of your time, and surrounding yourself with those who bring out your better self. Yet all too often, we trip over the obstacles we place in our own path — doubts, excuses, or choices that don’t serve us. These behaviors may not seem like much at that moment, but over time they compound into something substantial. And when things fall short, we’re quick to blame others instead of looking in the mirror.
Setting the bar high, investing in yourself, and doing what’s right isn’t like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It doesn’t require superhuman strength — just a winning mindset, strong values, and productive habits. It’s about showing up consistently, making good choices, and refusing to settle for less than your very best. The path to your dreams is paved by what you do each day — so don’t sell yourself short by working against yourself. You’re better than that. As actor Sean Patrick Flanery said, “Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”
