Ask someone who grew up in poverty what it’s like to put food on the table, and they’ll tell you peace of mind is precious. Ask someone who escaped oppression what it’s like to live in the USA and they’ll tell you how grateful they are to be free. Ask someone who survived a serious illness what it’s like to be alive and they’ll tell you to cherish every moment. And yet, so many of us ignore these blessings.
But what if everything you take for granted — your security, a safe place to sleep, the freedom to speak your mind, and the ability to choose for yourself — suddenly vanished?
The common thread isn’t the circumstance — it’s perspective. When something essential has been out of reach, its return carries weight. Security, freedom, and health stop being background conditions and become daily reminders of what truly matters.
Are You Jeopardizing What Matters Most?
When your lens changes, so does what you see — inviting three questions:
- When life comes easily, do we overlook the treasures we have? We get so used to comfort and convenience that everyday blessings fade from view. Noticing them simply requires slowing down and paying attention.
- Do we appreciate things more after we’ve earned them through effort and sacrifice? When something is handed to us, or we’re born into privilege, we’re less invested because we never paid a price for it.
- Do we value things more after experiencing life without them? It’s easier to go without something than to lose it after having it. Experiencing loss — or even the fear of it — forces us to pause and recognize what we once took for granted.
Adversity doesn’t create value; it reveals it.
Are You Too Comfortable to Notice?
Take a moment to count your blessings.
Do you live in a free country, with a roof over your head, good healthcare, and aren’t afraid for your safety? Do you live in peace, have freedom of expression, and practice the religion of your choice? Do you live in a home with working lights, clean, running water, and heat to keep you warm? Do you have a job that pays enough to support you and your family? Do you have access to fresh, healthy food for your family? Do you have enough money to cover necessities — and occasionally enjoy something extra? Do you have good friends, a loving family, and countless memories? Do you have free time to take a stroll in the park, read a good book, or tend your garden?
Chances are, you never give these blessings a second thought.
That’s because you’ve had them for ages, never had to sacrifice for them, or your mind is on other matters. Plus, most people are too busy chasing more. But as American writer Frank A. Clark once said, “If a fellow isn’t thankful for what he’s got, he isn’t likely to be thankful for what he’s going to get.”
The truth is, like anything else, when you become complacent or take things for granted, cracks begin to appear, like weeds sprouting through a perfect lawn. There’s a saying: “You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.” But the truth is, you knew exactly what you had, you just didn’t think you’d lose it.
Are You Endangering the Best Parts of Your Life?
This isn’t a gentle reminder — it’s a wake-up call. If you take what matters most for granted — like time with your children or aging parents — you may wake up one day and realize how much you’ve lost. Now is the moment to pay attention, cherish what you have, and live with intention before that wake-up call becomes irreversible. As the saying goes, “The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.”
