Ever walk into a restaurant where the server remembers a conversation you had weeks ago? It makes you feel special. Now contrast that with someone who introduces themselves as a stranger even though you’ve met several times…or a local business that tries to win you over with a generic “Dear Resident” letter. (Ugh.)
People want to feel special. Not in an over-the-top way, but in a thoughtful manner where they feel noticed, remembered, and valued. No one wants to feel like a number or an afterthought, yet we do it every day. In fact, this phenomenon isn’t limited to strangers; it happens between friends, colleagues, parents, and even spouses.
You’re the Most Important Person in the World (Yeah, Sure)
People are busy and distracted; and yes, some may even take others for granted. I get it. But if relationships matter to you, consider the message you send to loyal customers, dedicated employees, or your loving spouse every day. Are you empathetic or detached, responsive or indifferent, fully present or mentally elsewhere? In other words, are you making them feel special or unimportant?
Although you may care deeply about people, when you keep them waiting, take forever to respond to their emails, or sit on your duff instead of helping, it makes them feel like you don’t care. When you check your phone instead of listening, dominate conversations, or force your preferences on others, you send the same message. And when you say you’ll get back to them — but never do — you only reinforce it.
It’s not enough to recognize special holidays or try to buy affection; it’s the small things you do every day that matter. People may forget your words, but they’ll never forget how quickly you make them feel unimportant.
The Little Things Aren’t Little
Sometimes the smallest gestures leave the biggest impact. Here are 25 ways to remind people how much they matter…
- Take an interest in people, rather than treating them like a number.
- Make them a priority.
- Be available — physical presence is not the same as “being there.”
- Remember their name.
- Give them your undivided attention.
- Mention past conversations.
- Be consistent and reliable — someone they can always count on.
- Accept them for who they are.
- Make them feel comfortable around you.
- Know what matters to them.
- Listen more, talk less.
- Recognize what they do well.
- Share the credit.
- Praise them in public.
- Tell it like it is.
- Give honest, constructive feedback.
- Reach out for no reason.
- Be supportive during tough times.
- Offer help before being asked.
- Show gratitude and never take them for granted.
- Follow through on commitments.
- Trust them.
- Make them look good.
- Be responsive.
- Be happy for their achievements.
How to Say “You Matter”
You may be thinking, I know it’s important to treat people well. And you probably do…most of the time. But there’s a difference between knowing something and living it.
How often does your mind drift during a conversation? How often do you tune out because you think you know what they’re going to say? How often do you glance at your phone when people are talking to you? How often do you make others wait while you finish “just one more thing?”
What message are you sending? Are you hurting someone you care about? How would you feel if they responded in kind? Over time, small signals send a big message. You may be jeopardizing the relationship without realizing it.
Treat people special. It’s not complicated — just rare.
The way you listen, the attention you give, the patience you show; these moments quietly define how people see you. Not the big gestures, but the small, consistent ones that say, “You matter.” In a world full of noise, distraction, and self-importance, choosing to be present is a quiet form of respect that leaves a lasting imprint. You don’t need perfect words or grand displays, just the discipline to care enough to treat every moment as if it matters. As poet Maya Angelou once said, “In the end, people may forget what you said, but they won’t forget how you made them feel.”
