If you could be anyone, who would you be? A historical figure, a world-renowned celebrity, a great thinker, a successful entrepreneur, an athlete, a humanitarian, or anyone else who inspires you? Did an answer immediately come to mind, or did you pause to consider your options? While the person you chose may be someone you admire, the more revealing question is not who you chose, but why?
The criteria you used to make your selection say far more about you than the name itself. For example, did you choose a well-known public figure or someone you know personally? Did you focus more on what they have or on who they are? Did you choose someone for their outer beauty or inner qualities? Did you choose someone like you or someone very different? Did you choose that person for qualities you value, or for how they’re perceived by others?
In the end, you could have chosen anyone, but you chose that person for a reason. Your answer says less about the person you chose and more about the person you hope to become.
The Why Behind the Who
The obvious question is: Why didn’t you choose yourself? What do you see in that person that you don’t see in yourself? Is it a quality you admire, a strength you wish you had, or a life that seems freer, more meaningful, or more fulfilling than your own? Are you drawn to the way they think, the impact they have on others, or what they’ve achieved? Your answer may reveal more about your own hopes and values than you realize. Sometimes the people we admire are mirrors, reflecting the parts of ourselves we want to develop, the dreams we haven’t pursued, or the person we hope to become.
Now ask yourself: What will you do about it? If the person you chose has qualities you admire, you can cultivate them in your own life. What small steps could you take to develop them? If you admire their courage, where could you be braver? If it’s their kindness, how could you be more compassionate? If it’s their integrity, discipline, humility, or determination, why do those qualities matter to you — and what can you do today to start cultivating them? The people we admire often reveal the qualities we hope to strengthen in ourselves. Let that admiration inspire you to create the life you want to live.

“Frank Sonnenberg’s books guide us to focus on what matters — and this one is no exception! Because ‘when your eulogy is being read with your life’s actions to rehash, would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?’”
